Following a successful US headline tour in April 2025, Melbourne multi-instrumentalist Sunbeam Sound Machine returns with the bright new single ‘Waterfall (Strange Gravity)’. The track arrives with the announcement of Sunbeam Sound Machine’s fourth album Double Magic due for release on August 15th.

The sparkling soundscape of ‘Waterfall (Strange Gravity)’ was built from a forgotten guitar loop takes inspiration from burbling Australian nature sounds into a lush layered opener. Sunbeam Sound Machine – the moniker of Nick Sowersby – expands on the creation saying “I had a vague idea of the kind of music I wanted to make, and coming across this loop again suddenly crystallised the whole thing. It made me think of a song happening in an environment like a billabong or a creek, surrounded by nature sounds, which became a bit of a mission statement for the whole album.”

This expansion of sonic palette is seen across the dreamscapes that make up Sowersby’s fourth album Double Magic. The bedrock of four-to-the-floor rhythm is punctuated by a constant murmuring of nature sounds collected on excursions around Melbourne by bike armed with a Zoom recorder. “During lockdown my time out of the house was spent riding my bike along creeks around Melbourne recording nature sounds and they started not just finding their way into the songs, but also shaping the way I wanted the music to sound.” Says Sowersby, “I imagined each song taking place in that kind of environment and started trying to emulate the feeling of being in nature with the instrumentation.”

Lyrically, Double Magic spans love, loss, a journey into parenthood, social media feeds, the housing market, the Kananook creek and the healing nature of time, marking the most diverse album in context from one of Australia’s most underrated exports. Double Magic stands as the most confident and concert-ready omnibus of the project to date.
