On the eve of kicking off a 24-date regional Australian tour, Melbourne punk rock icons The Smith Street Band have dropped a brand-new single and announced their seventh album Once I Was Wild, out Friday November 21.
The album’s title track, ‘Once I Was Wild’, serves as its third single, following on from earlier releases ‘This Is It’ and ‘Star Child’. The new track captures a bittersweet nostalgia, as the band’s lead singer Wil Wagner explains:
“I’ve been writing this song for years. The verses came to me pretty immediately while on tour in America but I’d never really worked out how to use it until I came up with the line and the idea of ‘once I was wild’ and everything fell into place. It’s a very nostalgic song, we tried to make it feel bittersweet and wistful but ultimately hopeful. It’s about being innocent, stupid and free.”
The album was recorded once again at the band’s own solar-powered Bush House Studios in regional Victoria. For the first time, they worked in-studio with their longtime live sound engineer Joel Taylor. The record was mixed by Anton Hagop and mastered by George Georgiadis.
