Sui Zhen has released a new track ‘Calm Winds’ via Our First 100 Days. Sui Zhen performs at SXSW this March and in Melbourne on Friday 7 April with Harvey Sutherland at The Night Cat. Full ticket details below.
Sui Zhen, aka Becky Freeman, talks about the track:
“I started to compose this song when I was on artist residency in Hokkaido, Japan. I’d recently learned that my mother was sick and I used the time and space to process my emotions, consequently a few songs were written with similar subject matter. I wasn’t planning on releasing them necessarily but it was a wonderful outlet to turn something personal and painful into something more cathartic. I was having to embrace the uncertainty of the future, and getting used to that feeling day to day. I think that sentiment resonates for those suffering in the current political climate, people whose basic rights are being undermined and their needs devalued by those in power. 2016 was a huge year with many twists and turns. I wanted to make a song that turned that feeling of frustration and unrest into some kind of unifying feeling, to say that, perhaps if we work together, we can find a way out of this difficult time.”
The Our First 100 Days project was started in conjunction with Secretly Group and 30 Songs, 30 Days in response to the proposed policies of the Trump administration. All profits raised from Our First 100 Days will go directly to organisations working on the front lines of climate, women’s rights, immigration and fairness.
