Following a whirlwind season of touring in support of her latest album Basia’s Palace, Basia Bulat returns with her new EP Bouquet, a delicate collection of reimagined acoustic recordings that offers a fresh perspective on some of the album’s most beloved songs via Secret City Records. Recorded in Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood with engineer Andrew Woods, Bouquet emerged during a quieter autumn period following months on the road. Stripped back to their essence—voice, guitar, and autoharp—the songs reveal new dimensions, allowing their melodies and emotional core to blossom in unexpected ways.
The EP features reworked versions of ‘Right Now,’ ‘My Angel,’ and ‘Disco Polo,’ with dreamy string arrangements by Drew Jurecka taking on new forms, while ‘Laughter’ receives an entirely new arrangement by Kieran Poile. Throughout the collection, woodwind performances by Naomi McCarroll-Butler weave gracefully through the songs, adding warmth and texture.
“I always picture a child handing me a bouquet when I hear the first chords of this recording, a hand-tied bunch of wildflowers they picked walking on their way to the park. All the thought, care and excitement of making a gift from nature, finding something new in bloom, a flurry of dandelions and sticks and violets so perfectly imperfect, so it felt like it had to be the first song of the EP,” she says.
