Brooklyn-based Scout Gillett joins the Captured Tracks roster and shares her first release for the label: the title track of her debut EP one to ten, out April 29th, 2022. Listen below!
The five-song collection consists of four covers — of Broadcast, Blaze Foley, Ferrante & Teicher, and Brenda Lee — alongside the hypnotic original ‘one to ten’, which arrives today alongside a dreamy video, shot by Julie Orlick.
“I wrote ‘one to ten’ a few years ago to my future self, at a time when I longed for true vulnerability,” explains Scout. “It’s a track that encourages us to part ways with resistance and defy the urge to overanalyze – to let go. I wish for myself and my loved ones to experience true freedom in life and love, and this song expresses the beginning of that.” Of the EP, she adds: “The covers here complement the title track. one to ten is a peek into my roots and inspiration up until this point in my life. I leaned into the diversity of my influences, classics that I grew up with and wanted to share with my own spin.”
Since relocating from Kansas City in 2017, Scout has become a fixture in Brooklyn’s music scene, playing in multiple live bands and even starting her own booking company to organise local shows. Her determined, intrepid nature is the product of a childhood spent running barefoot through rural Missouri and a coming of age in Kansas City’s punk scene. On her debut single ‘one to ten,’ Scout’s signature velvet vocals soar above soulful, folk-tinged sonics that draw on these roots and her DIY spirit.
one to ten showcases Scout’s inimitable sound and impeccable taste. The timeless quality of her music allows her takes on Broadcast and Brenda Lee to sit comfortably alongside one another, a seamless collection of electric guitar, pedal steel, harmonica, and more. These expert, lush arrangements provide a vintage-hued frame for the original track, as Scout offers an exciting taste of more to come.
