Ryan Downey shares the striking second single ‘Those Eyes That Answer’, from his jaw-dropping debut album Running out April 13, and has now announced a headline east coast tour in support of the album! See further ticket details and watch the video below.
‘Those Eyes That Answer’ encompasses everything that is great about Downey’s music. His undeniable voice resonates with richness and gravity while a minutely detailed and singularly original musical world unfurls around it.
As Downey explains, “This song is about witnessing the sublime and gaining a greater sense of yourself in that moment. It’s partly based on seeing Picasso’s Guernica in the flesh. It’s a painting that took me by surprise with it’s overwhelming mix of horror and beauty, leaving me with that strange sensation of feeling tiny in its presence but also connected to something much bigger than myself at the same time.”
Honouring the song’s origins in the video, Ryan and (director) Alex Badham drew from classicism and modernist art and photography, applying a twist to the classic single-take shot whilst adding a hint of contemporary Sci-Fi.
Produced by Steve Hassett and recorded in both New York and Melbourne. Running is a glorious and meticulously constructed 21st century folk gem. Not a note detracts from Downey’s rich baritone as he sings a song cycle of humour and pathos; self-analysis, sex, love and modern life.
