Big Smoke share their new single ‘Wrong’, which is accompanied by a video that is both raw and beautiful, premiered via Stereogum. Watch it below.
“In this video, the aim was to get participants to the same place of raw vulnerability you hear in Adrian’s voice on the track by stripping away the familiar—both physically and mentally—and then saving them from it,” says Director Sean Lynch. “We allowed the partners to re-discover each other’s faces and see each other in a way they’d forgotten, capturing their journey through sincere, subconscious body language that reveals what we can’t hide—fear, regret, loneliness and ultimately pure joy.”
‘Wrong’ is the second single to be released from the upcoming debut album Time Is Golden – mixed by Grammy award winning engineer Shawn Everett. The album features 10 songs written by Adrian over the period of a decade, with additional arrangements by band members Alex O’Gorman (bass), Luke Brennan (drums), Tim Baker (guitar), and Joe Cope (keyboards).
Luke explains, “Wrong is a tune that, as a band, we spent ages trying to get right. We had big dreams for it on the record, to bring it out of the realm of standard pop-rock and get to its emotional depth. In the mixing stage, this track was a favourite of Shawn’s, and I think he took it all the way.”
Time Is Golden was recorded in November 2015 shortly after Adrian (singer and songwriter) underwent rounds of chemotherapy to treat oesophageal cancer and prior to him having brain surgery in early January. Working tirelessly, the band continued to produce overdubs at The Aviary Studios in Abbotsford from late 2015 to early 2016. Adrian died in May, less than a year after his diagnosis.
Time Is Golden is a testament to the band’s determination and vision that lives out Adrian’s wish to create an enduring, major work.
