In September, Big Thief released their new album Double Infinity. The album quickly garnered widespread praise from fans and critics alike. Now, on the heels of the band’s sold-out Forest Hills Stadium show – their largest New York headline show to date – they share their performance of ‘Grandmother’ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The song was performed by an impressive 12-piece band including Lenker, Meek, Krivchenia, Joshua Crumbly, Laraaji, Jon Nellen, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, June McDoom, Alena Spanger, Michael Buishas, and Adam Brisbin.
The performance captures Big Thief’s magical energy on tour. The extensive tour has included stops at Berkeley’s The Greek Theater, Los Angeles’s The Hollywood Bowl, Boston’s MGM Music Hall, and their first-ever show in Mexico at Teatro Metropolitan. Big Thief’s European and UK leg of the tour will take place next Spring and includes some of the band’s biggest headline shows of their career thus far.
Double Infinity was recorded last winter at the Power Station, New York City. For three solid weeks, the trio would ride bicycles on frozen streets between Brooklyn and Manhattan, meeting in Power Station’s warm wood-panelled room. Together with a community of musicians (Alena Spanger, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, Jon Nellen, Joshua Crumbly, June McDoom, Laraaji, Mikel Patrick Avery, Mikey Buishas), they would play for nine hours a day, tracking together – simultaneously – improvising arrangements and making collective discoveries. The album was recorded live with minimal overdubs. Double Infinity was produced, engineered and mixed by longtime Big Thief collaborator Dom Monks.
