Following their syrupy bop ‘Sugar’ and lush single ‘Sister’, Dorsal Fins share ‘Criminal’, their third single from their long-awaited third album Star of the Show, out Friday May 13. Watch the accompanying animated video by artist and illustrator Eleanor James below!
‘Criminal’ came together from a demo that Jarrad Brown had hidden in his vault, initially titled ‘Spirit Gambler’. Channeling the power of three in the name of the magic of collectivism. Brown’s sweet spy jazz/funk instrumental forming the basis, they rode with the theme of gambling your spirit for a ‘momentary high’, a theme that runs hot throughout the album.
Multi-instrumentalist Liam Mcgorry explains “It’s a song about how we are constantly being wooed by Capitalism to consume more & more, and the things we sacrifice for the sake of convenience. We raise our own stakes, We must work, play, achieve, relax hard & fast and score ourselves accordingly. Criminal says ‘we see your tricks and we Stan true to our spirit’.
Star of the Show is the group’s first record in six years, peeling back from a cast of nine mates to a record made by the band’s songwriting trinity – Liam McGorry, and co-vocalists Ella Thompson & Jarrad Brown. On this record, the trio, together with producer and friend John Castle, have distilled the chemistry that sits at the cetacean core of Dorsal Fins, to create a sonic escape that any heartsick or euphoric music lover can swim right into.
To celebrate the release of Star of the Show, Dorsal Fins will be launching the album at Melbourne’s The Night Cat on Friday 24 June, with supports from Karate Boogaloo and DJ Friday. Tickets available here.
