Announcing Pointer Recordings

Remote Control Records is proud to introduce new label imprint – Pointer Recordings.

Debut signings to Pointer Recordings include a collaboration between Sydney’s imbi and Slim Set, Melbourne three-piece Telenova, a collaboration between Canberra artists Ryan Fennis and Voidhood, and Melbourne club project Cavallo Nero. More info on all artists via the bios below.

Founded by Sweetie Zamora (Remote Control’s Head Of Labels & Promotions), Pointer Recordings is a new label that exists to amplify the voices of fiercely creative and ambitious artists. Centred around non-traditional releases with artists aligned to the future of music, it’s a wholly independent, uncompromisingly artist-friendly digital-only label.

Sweetie Zamora shares – “It’s been an absolute joy to start Pointer Recordings and begin to cultivate this new family of artists. Each artists belief in me and the team is incredibly energising and propels us to work harder. Special mention to Darren Lesaguis who has been my right hand through the creation of Pointer Recordings. I’m really proud of the work we’ve all achieved and can’t wait to share more over the coming months.”

Premiered via triple j’s Declan Byrne last night – the debut release via Pointer Recordings is the hard-hitting and powerful ‘Heatsink’ by imbi x Slim Set. Amongst common feelings of perpetual overwhelm and existential dread, it’s easy to forget to pause and breathe but ‘Heatsink’ is the reminder we all need. With a relentlessly catchy hook and irresistible DnB production, ‘Heatsink’ offers a brief reminder of a sweaty 3:00 AM club moment.

On signing to Pointer Recordingsimbi shares – Pointer came at the perfect time! Joining up with Pointer reassured me that there are ways to pursue music that feel good and labels out there really looking to do best by the artist and themselves. I am so grateful to be part of this team!”

‘Heatsink’ is also accompanied by a game coded by Slim Set’s Atro in which avatars of the artists, illustrated by Alvin Ruiyuan Zhong, navigate their way from Parramatta station to Sydney’s CBD over a myriad of obstacles.

About imbi x Slim Set

imbi is an experience. Through intention, authentic expression and musical magick imbi transfers tantalising and tangible energies to audiences around the world. imbi uses fluid lyricism, poetry, harmony and the raw power of their voice to share vulnerable feelings and foster intimate moments with every individual they perform for/share space with. Having performed for audiences across so-called ‘australia’ and Aotearoa (N.Z.) imbi has left many strong impressions, continuing to expand their practice of performance and push the limits of crowd engagement/intimacy every time they sing.

Slim Set are a rapper-producer duo hailing from Western Sydney. They mangle electronic and rap sonics into a hybrid sound that’s unique in the Australian music landscape. Slim Set’s 2020 included a peak time set at Golden Plains, where they shared a stage with huge names like The Pixies, Sampa The Great and Hot Chip. They also took part in Conscious 2020, a music program run by Campbelltown Arts Centre, alongside A-Girl, Spvrrow and T-Breezy. They burst onto the Australian rap landscape in 2018 with ‘Cooked’ and ‘Lazy’, which ended 2018 as the #1 and #2 most played songs on FBi Radio. Those singles saw them nominated for three FBi SMAC awards and support international acts including The Streets, Flohio, AJ Tracey and Sir Spyro. They’ve also appeared as guests on Triple J Mixup and taken up the Wednesday Sunset slot on FBi Radio where they pushed the hottest talent out of West and South West Sydney every week.

About Telenova

Telenova are a Melbourne three-piece, fronted by the alluring vocals of multi-disciplined creative Angeline Armstrong, alongside the refined musicality of Edward Quinn (Slum Sociable) and Joshua Moriarty (Miami Horror). With an air of quiet confidence thanks to their self-directed cinematic aesthetics and trip-hop influenced production, Telenova trade in a sound that’s unequivocally Melbourne yet global in scope.

Assembled by Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) at a writing camp in early 2020, Telenova evoke the elegance and feminine power of Lana Del Ray and Karen O, the sophistication of Massive Attack and Portishead and the effortless energy of Khruangbin and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Debut single ‘Bones’ will be released Thursday 18th March. Pre-add / Pre-save via telenova.lnk.to/bones

About Ryan Fennis x Voidhood

Ryan Fennis experiments with a collage-style songwriting process and bent production sensibility. Fennis explores alternate realities, the confines and potentials in genre and culture, and what it is to create in the technological age through his music and visuals. Ryan’s EP ‘Iceberg’ was released in October 2020.

Voidhood toys with his listeners as an unreliable narrator, warping his baritone voice between abrasive flows and crystallised auto-tune. His production blends experimental electronic and goth tied up in heavy 808s and dissolving sounds. Voidhood’s upcoming debut record ‘PSYCHTHRILLER’ intends to evoke the insular, ambiguous qualities of films from the genre of the same name.

Together, the two attempt to give shape and sound to what it means to live in a present-day, technological dystopia, centred in Australia’s capital city.

About Cavallo Nero

Cavallo Nero is a Melbourne-based three-piece outfit dressed for the occasion. Formed in the summer of 2019 by three members of live-show sweat-stalwarts Total Giovanni, this new project delves deeper into clubland and the after-hours – all that the strobe light touches and the smoke machine envelopes. Cavallo Nero exists in a realm where time dilates and contracts to the slip of the tongue. Unconscious vocalising is the guide, rhythmic intuition is the compass. It’s techno slowed to a hypnotic beat, distorted funk in the after party’s after-party dreamland. The path paved is unmarked, unwound and tangential. Follow your hips and heart, get immersed in the hypnotic pulse that rises and falls within the same breath. Listen to the voice, it will guide you toward your favourite party, and away from all your inhibitions.
