Coinciding with the 2026 World Cup, 4AD is pleased to present two alternative World Cup anthems from Air Miami and Colourbox, packaged as a special double A-side 7” single entitled Complicated Opposition, with artwork designed by Chris Bigg featuring photography by The Douglas Brothers. See details on each track below.

Air Miami – ‘World Cup Fever’ (1995): Originally released on the band’s 1995 Me. Me. Me. Album. Came to be during the summer of 1994, when Mark Robinson joined Blast Off Country Style on tour, coinciding with the U.S. hosting the World Cup for the first time. Said Robinson: “During the day, we’d do the things that indie bands at the time would do — go to thrift shops. One day, I bought football cleats and bright blinding orange polyester coach’s shorts. The band started calling me ‘coach’. At a show in North Carolina, I was sporting my new outfit, complete with a matching bright orange Teenbeat shirt. Esther Oliver came up to me and said, ‘You’ve got World Cup fever’. That stuck and was the inspiration for the song.” Remastered by Pete Weiss.

Colourbox – ‘The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme’ (1986): A bonus track from the 1986 CD reissue of the band’s self-titled debut mini-album. Originally intended as a football theme and was even considered for the BBC’s World Cup Grandstand during the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico (though, it was unfortunately not used). Remastered by Kevin Vanbergen.

Beyond these two tracks, fans of the label might be pleased to learn that 4AD’s relationship with football extends even further.

4AD/v23 designer Vaughan Oliver was a keen football fan (“it’s football first, graphic design second!”) and was even a licensed FA coach. He additionally designed the artwork for a Sunderland AFC single and was also asked to design a new club crest, although that didn’t end up happening.

The Lillies were a Spurs-loving indie supergroup formed as a collaboration between members of Cocteau Twins (Simon Raymonde), Lush (Miki Berenyi, Chris Acland), and Moose (Kevin McKillop, Russell Yates). They released only one song titled ‘And David Seaman Will Be Very Disappointed About That…’, which appeared on a flexi-disc that came with the Tottenham Hotspur football fanzine The Spur (Issue 24, September 1991).

The Complicated Opposition 7” ft. Air Miami’s ‘World Cup Fever’ and Colourbox’s ‘The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme’ will be released on 22 May, along with the digital release of both singles.
