Two years after the release of his celebrated debut album Tremors, SOHN has returned with the release of Rennen, out today via 4AD / Remote Control Records.
The London-born artist has traded Vienna for the warmth of Los Angeles, but the influence of his former home still lingers (Rennen is a German verb meaning ‘to run’). Resuming a nocturnal schedule – as he did with Tremors – SOHN spent a month writing alone in northern California, recording until morning most days.
The ten songs of Rennen are confidently direct and focused. Consciously exercising restraint SOHN uses only a handful of musical elements on each track, eager to allow the spotlight to shine on the vocals, melodies and rhythms. Throughout the album, SOHN also deals with some monumental changes in his personal life over the last two years, from falling in love, to getting married and later becoming a father.
First single ‘Signal’ (accompanied by a video directed by and starring Milla Jovovich) takes imagery of a ship on rough seas seeking safe port, whilst SOHN uses ‘Conrad’ to touch upon the pervading mood of Europe’s precarious political climate. Latest single, and album opener ‘Hard Liquor‘ is a bold and soulful offering, accompanied by a striking music video directed by Jovan Todorovic, watch it below.
