Watch – SOHN ‘Hard Liquor’

SOHN has kick-started 2017 with a brand new single ‘Hard Liquor’,the opening track from SOHN’s imminent second album Rennen, out Friday 13th January via 4AD / Remote Control Records. It’s a gutsy follow up to previous Rennen singles ‘Signal’, ‘Conrad’ and title track ‘Rennen’. The slick black and white companion video, created by Jovan Todorovic and shot in Belgrade, Serbia can be viewed below.

On top of his album release, SOHN has been announced to make his debut performance at both weekends at Coachella, and on late night television with Jimmy Kimmel.

Speaking about the piece, Todorovic explains “SOHN sent us a frame from Jurassic Park, a cup of water with ripples in it resonating from the massive steps of the approaching T-Rex. The concentric circles inspired me to look for more circles, not only in the physical world, but even more importantly within my inner life. A line is not enough to symbolise the vector of one’s life, I feel it’s maybe better represented as a progression of circles that are chained together. So this video is about circles and lines, the past, present and future, regret, anger, despair… being lost in the tunnel of ones inner life and the physical labyrinth that surrounds us. In the end we face our own self, and we are led to dive deeper within. To me the video is very meaningful on a personal level, but I tried to paint it in such a way so everyone could potentially reflect on themselves. We shot the video back home in Serbia and were lucky to find some amazing locations, and a wonderful crew. But it was Dado, one of the most talented theater actors in Croatia today, who really gave the video its substance.”

For his follow-up to 2014 debut Tremors, London-born SOHN traded Vienna for the warmth of Los Angeles, but the influence of his former home still lingers (Rennen is a German verb meaning ‘to run’). Resuming a nocturnal schedule – as he did with Tremors – SOHN spent a month writing alone in northern California, recording until the morning. An exercise in restraint, SOHN used only a handful of musical elements on each track, allowing the spotlight to shine on the vocals, melodies and rhythms.
