La Force, the captivating solo project of Ariel Engle, unveils a brand-new song — her first new material since 2024. ‘Darth Vapor,’ a stand-alone single available now across all digital streaming platforms, offers a thrilling sneak peek of a full-length album coming in 2027. Ariel has been busy touring with Patrick Watson in support of his recent release, Uh Oh, performing their duet ‘The Lonely Lights’ on the road. As a member of Broken Social Scene, she also appears on the collective’s sixth studio album, released last May to rave reviews.
Ariel shares the creative process and themes behind this new offering:
“The song ‘Darth Vapor’ was born out of an improvised jam session in a small one-room studio in Montreal. I picked up a right-handed bass hanging on the wall and started playing it upside down, because I’m left-handed. I remember it all coming together at once — Liam [O’Neil] on some kind of rhythm-generating machine, and Thom Gill on a soft synth. Later, Liam and I shaped the raw take, and the theme emerged. The song is about excavation, consumption, and lust — both my own seemingly endless need to consume, and that of the world’s population. This endless want in the face of a finite world of resources.”
“Coming to in a dystopian landscape, La Force scrambles onto her feet halting forward as she tries to find her footing in the barren urban surroundings. The video is a tongue-in-cheek nod to vampire movies or a cheap horror movie. In the clip, La Force becomes the embodiment of appetite. Like a ghoul, she is consumed by a fever for red glowing jewels which she eats hungrily. She is appetite without satiety and without purpose. She is hunger”, says La Force about the Darth Vapor video.
La Force performed last week at Secret City Records’ 20th anniversary shows during Pop Montreal and will take part in the People Festival in Berlin this October, before flying to Australia and Singapore with Patrick Watson for the Uh Oh tour. New solo concert dates will be announced shortly.
