Announced: Gus Englehorn – The Hornbook + ‘Thyme’

Two years after the release of his record Dungeon Master, former pro snowboarder reborn nomadic psych-pop prophet Gus Englehorn announces brand new album The Hornbook, due for release January 31st. Today he shares a first glimpse of the new record with the nervy post-punk propulsion of a track that is ‘Thyme’.

“This song is about someone who travels back in time to Scarborough fair,” Gus says. “A song about yearning for the past. I’ve always dreamed of living in medieval times and Scarborough Fair is #1 on my list of places I would time travel to given the opportunity. This is the first time I’ve worked someone else’s poetry into my songwriting. The feeling of collaborating with an unknown poet who lived 400 hundred years ago was a wonderful and mystical experience.”

Co-produced by Mark Lawson and mixed by Paul Leary from the legendary noise-rock band Butthole Surfers, The Hornbook magically transmutes the entire history of 20th-century rock ‘n’ roll—’50s golden oldies, ‘60s garage spunk, ‘70s glam flamboyance, ‘80s indie transgression, ‘90s lo-fi weirdness—into an alien transmission from the future.

The Hornbook reminds you of what it’s truly like to be a child, when you look upon the world with both awe and confusion, and start to understand that life isn’t all puppy dogs and balloons, and that evil exists beyond the make-believe confines of storybooks. The Hornbook is more about viewing life through an augmented-reality headset, pulling IRL references into its phantasmagorical scenery.
