Ahead of her SXSW showcases, alternative pop enigma Sui Zhen returns with her latest single ‘Sleepless’. At a sprawling 13 minutes, ‘Sleepless’ defies the traditional confines of a pop song, inviting listeners on a haunting journey through grief’s depths.
Drawing inspiration from influences ranging from post-punk to krautrock, the track blends spoken-word incantations and melodic hooks with pulsing synths, distorted guitars, and a mix of electronic and live percussion.
Emerging as a testament to the human spirit’s resilience in the face of profound loss, the genesis of the song was marked by Sui Zhen’s grief following her mother’s passing, serving as a refuge during sleepless nights and moments of immense pain. However, the track underwent further transformation after the tragic death of her newborn son in 2021, evolving into a powerful anthem of resilience and defiance against conventional notions of healing.
